Getting Started With Tactical RPGs
Tactical RPGs look dense from the outside, with their grids and status effects and cooldowns. But the core idea is simple: put the right unit in the right place at the right time. Everything else is detail you learn by losing a few fights.
My first tip is to learn turn order before anything else. Knowing who acts next tells you whether to attack now or defend and wait. In Emberfall Saga I ignored this early and paid for it with wiped parties.
Positioning is your free power-up. Keep squishy casters behind your tanks and use terrain to block flanks. A perfectly placed line can turn a losing fight around without a single upgrade.
Don't hoard your big abilities. New players save their best spells for a moment that never comes, then die with a full toolkit. Use cooldowns, let them recharge, and keep the pressure on.
Finally, embrace retries. Tactical RPGs expect you to fail, learn the enemy, and come back smarter. Treat each loss as a free scouting run and the whole genre opens up.
