Maze Building 101 for Tower Defence

Maze Building 101 for Tower Defence

May 14, 2026 · Marek Janssen

The biggest leap in tower defence isn't buying stronger towers, it's learning to build mazes. If a game lets you place towers that block the path, you can force enemies to walk a long, winding route straight through your kill zone. That single idea changed how I play the whole genre.

Start by thinking about the longest path you can legally create. Most games won't let you fully seal the route, so leave exactly one gap and funnel everything through it. Place your highest single-target damage at the point where enemies spend the most time.

Spread effects like slow and poison belong early in the maze, where they can tick for the full journey. Burst damage belongs at the end, cleaning up whatever survived. Mixing those two by accident is the most common beginner mistake I see.

Don't be afraid to rebuild between waves. A layout that handled waves one through five might collapse against flying or splitting enemies, and good players adapt instead of hoping. Keep a little gold in reserve for emergencies.

Once maze logic clicks, games like Gatekeeper's Vigil go from frustrating to genuinely relaxing. It's a skill that carries across almost every title in the genre.
