Upgrade or Build New? The Eternal Tower Defence Dilemma
Every tower defence run comes down to the same tense question: do I upgrade what I have or place something new? Both feel right in the moment, and picking wrong can end a run. Over many games I've landed on a few rules of thumb.
Early on, placement usually wins. Coverage matters more than raw power when enemies are weak, so spreading cheap towers to shape the path pays off. You're building the skeleton of your defence here.
Mid-run, upgrades start to pull ahead. A maxed tower in a great spot almost always beats two half-upgraded ones scattered around. Concentrated damage punches through armour that chip damage can't.
Watch the enemy preview if the game offers one. A wave of armoured units calls for upgrades that boost damage, while a swarm wants more towers for coverage. Reading ahead turns guesswork into planning.
The trap is spreading thin out of fear. Commit to a plan, feed your best towers, and accept that a tight, powerful core beats a wide, weak net nearly every time.
